Research Funding Governance Guide

What are Research Funding Proposals?

Research funding proposals are specialized decisions made by the Due Diligence (DD) Crew to allocate resources for research projects within PoSciDonDAO. These proposals ensure transparent and effective distribution of research funds. View the current Research Funding proposals here: NOTE: Upon dApp deployment, the DD Crew will consist of only a few members, and the research funding governance system may not be immediately active. As the DAO evolves, additional DD Crew members will be onboarded, enabling a larger community of scientists to actively participate in governing the research funding process.

Who Can Participate?

Unlike operations proposals, research funding governance is restricted to:

  • Due Diligence Crew members only

  • Members must have at least 1,000 SCI tokens locked (subject to change)

  • Members must maintain their tokens locked while participating

Compensation

DD Crew members can be compensated in both stable assets and SCI tokens, depending on their time commitment and level of expertise.

Types of Research Proposals

  1. Research Funding

    • Transfer funds to researchers

    • Allocate resources for projects

    • Support scientific initiatives

  2. Non-Executable Proposals

    • Discussion of research directions

    • Project evaluations

    • Research policy recommendations

How Voting Works

Research funding uses a unique weighted voting system:

  • Each DD member gets a base voting power

  • Members can have voting multipliers based on expertise/contribution

  • Example:

    • Base vote = 1

    • Member with 2x multiplier gets 2 votes

    • Member with 3x multiplier gets 3 votes

  • Voting multipliers can be adjusted by the DAO per individual DD crew member

Key Governance Rules (subject to change)

  • 🎯 Quorum: Minimum number of DD members must vote

  • ⏰ Voting Period: 2 weeks to cast votes

  • 🔒 Lock Period: Tokens stay locked for 2 weeks after voting

  • 🔄 Vote Changes: Allowed within first 12 hours of voting

  • 📊 Passing Threshold: More votes in favor than against as long as the quorum has been reached

Proposal Journey

  1. Submission Phase

    • DD member submits proposal

    • Includes detailed research plan

    • Specifies funding requirements

  2. Active Phase

    • DD members review and vote

    • Discussion and debate

    • Due diligence performed

  3. Scheduling Phase

    • Proposal passes voting

    • Preparing for fund transfer

  4. Execution Phase

    • Funds are transferred

    • Project begins

  5. Completion/Cancellation

    • Project funded successfully, or

    • Proposal rejected/canceled

Best Practices for DD Members

  1. Before Proposing

    • Ensure thorough research plan

    • Clear budget breakdown

    • Well-defined objectives

    • Maintain required token lock

  2. During Review

    • Evaluate scientific merit

    • Assess budget appropriateness

    • Consider long-term impact

    • Engage in constructive discussion

  3. After Approval

    • Monitor project progress

    • Track fund utilization

    • Ensure accountability

    • Document outcomes

Important Notes

  • 🔍 Expertise-Based: Voting power can be weighted based on subject matter expertise

  • 🤝 Collaborative: Encourages discussion among DD members

  • 📈 Merit-Focused: Decisions based on scientific and technical merit

  • ⚖️ Balanced: System designed for fair resource allocation

  • 🔐 Secure: Multi-step process ensures proper fund management

Remember: As a DD member, you have a crucial responsibility in directing research funding to projects that advance the DAO's scientific mission while ensuring responsible use of resources.
